No. You don't need to be an electrician or have previous electrical experience to complete the course.

In Queensland, an electrical work licence is not required for the workplace inspection and testing covered by this course when it is performed by a competent person.

Yes. After successfully completing the course, you'll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for UEESS00174 – Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set.

Because testing and tagging requirements can vary between states, territories, industries and workplaces, you should always follow the requirements that apply where you are working.

n Queensland, a competent person has the knowledge and skills required to inspect and test electrical equipment. These capabilities may be gained through training, qualifications, experience or a combination of these.

Completing nationally recognised test and tag training and being assessed as competent provides evidence of these capabilities. The employer or self-employed person is responsible for determining that the person carrying out the work has the required competency.

The face-to-face training takes one full day, but it also includes approximately three to four hours of online WHS preparation and a short skills check.

Classes include both theory and extensive hands-on practice using portable appliance testers. You'll be assessed on the required knowledge and practical skills before completing the course.

You'll learn how to visually inspect, test and tag common low-voltage cord-connected electrical equipment and cord assemblies. This includes items such as portable appliances, power tools, extension leads, IEC leads and power boards.

You'll also learn how to use a portable appliance tester, identify safe and unsafe equipment, apply the appropriate tags and record your testing results.

The course doesn't cover electrical installation, repairs or modifications. It also doesn't include plug top replacement or three-phase test and tag training, which are available as separate courses.

You'll learn to recognise when equipment is outside your training or requires attention from a licensed electrician or another appropriately qualified person.

No. Portable appliance testers and the equipment required for training are provided on the day.

If you already own a PAT, you're welcome to bring it so you can practise using the model you'll work with after the course.

Your Statement of Attainment doesn't have an expiry date. However, you're responsible for maintaining current knowledge and practical competency.

Refresher training is recommended if you haven't used your skills for some time or if relevant standards, equipment or workplace requirements change.

The qualification provides an important competency foundation for offering test and tag services in Queensland. However, businesses performing testing and tagging work must also hold an electrical contractor licence that permits this type of work.

You'll also need appropriate business registration, insurance, testing equipment and record-keeping systems. The qualification does not authorise electrical installation, repair or modification work.
