Test and Tag Requirements in Tasmania

Under Tasmania's Work Health and Safety Regulations, electrical equipment used in conditions that could cause damage or reduce its expected life must be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person.

You don't need to be a licensed electrician to carry out standard testing and tagging within the scope of this course. However, you need the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to inspect electrical equipment, use testing equipment safely and correctly, and interpret the test results.

Our Online Test & Tag Course provides structured training and practical assessment in these skills. Once you've successfully completed the course, you'll receive a Statement of Attainment demonstrating the competencies covered by your training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course enough to test and tag confidently on my own?

The course combines essential theory with guided hands-on practice using your own PAT and test items. You must demonstrate the required knowledge and practical skills before being assessed as competent.

The training is designed to prepare you to begin testing and tagging within the scope of your competency.

Your confidence will continue to develop through regular practice, and you can contact our team for free lifetime technical support after completing the course.

How will my practical skills be assessed online?

Your trainer will observe and guide your practical activities during the online session. During the assessment phase, you'll complete a practical assessment answer sheet and email it to your trainer.

Your trainer will review and mark the assessment before the practical session ends.

Do I need to be an electrician or have previous experience?

No. You don't need to be an electrician or have previous electrical or test and tag experience to enrol.

The course takes you through the required knowledge and practical skills step by step. Testing and tagging does not, however, authorise you to perform electrical installation, repair or modification work that requires an appropriately licensed electrical worker.

Can I complete the course using a phone or tablet?

You can complete the online session using a PC or tablet with a reliable internet connection, a working camera, and a microphone.

A mobile phone is not suitable for running the course session. Make sure your device is set up and ready before the practical training begins.

Is this qualification recognised throughout Australia?

Yes. After completing the course, you'll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for UEESS00174 – Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set.

Testing and tagging requirements can vary between states, territories, industries and workplaces. You should always follow the requirements that apply where you intend to work

Does my qualification expire or require refresher training?

Your Statement of Attainment does not have an expiry date. However, you're responsible for maintaining current knowledge and practical competency.

Refresher training is recommended if you haven't used your skills for some time or if relevant standards, testing equipment or workplace requirements change.

Can I use this qualification to start my own test and tag business?

The qualification can provide the competency foundation for offering test and tag services in Australia, provided you remain competent and work within the scope of your training.

Starting a business involves additional responsibilities, including business registration, appropriate insurance, suitable testing equipment, accurate record-keeping and compliance with state, industry and client requirements. Licensing requirements can vary by jurisdiction; for example, an electrical contractor licence permitting test and tag work may be required in Queensland.

The qualification does not authorise electrical installation, repair, modification or other licensed electrical work.
