What happens during the Test & Tag training day?

The Test & Tag training day combines essential theory with practical, hands-on testing using a portable appliance tester. The morning session focuses on understanding inspection procedures, safety principles and compliance requirements, while the afternoon is dedicated to learning how to correctly test and tag equipment in real-world scenarios. All classes are capped at a maximum of 12 participants to ensure everyone receives individual time and support from the trainer. By the end of the day, you should feel confident testing and tagging independently in your workplace.

How long is the Test & Tag course?

The Test & Tag course is a full-day training program, typically running from 8:00 am to approximately 4:30 pm, with breaks for morning tea and lunch. If you are completing the Nationally Recognised course, there is also a self-paced WHS component to be completed prior to your training date. This additional component generally takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your existing knowledge and experience.

What certification do I receive after completing the course?

Upon successful completion of the Nationally Recognised Test & Tag course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for UEESS00174 – Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set. You will also receive a fully verifiable digital certificate that is secure, tamper-proof and accessible via your digital wallet. Your digital ID is issued by email immediately after completion, allowing you to download, access and share your qualification at any time. Employers or clients can scan your QR code for instant verification.

By completing this nationally recognised course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for UEESS00174 - Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set.

This Skill Set comprises two Units of Competency:

UEECD0007 – Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
UEERL0003 – Conduct in-service safety testing of electrical cord-connected equipment and cord assemblies
Course fee: $499 (GST exempt)
Course duration: One day of face-to-face training (7–8 hours), plus an online WHS component (3–4 hours) and a short LLND skills check (5–10 minutes)
Certification issued: Statement of Attainment and digital ID card with your certificate number
Electrical knowledge: No previous electrical knowledge or experience is required

What You Will Learn

The course combines essential theory with extensive hands-on practice. You will learn how to:

Apply relevant workplace health and safety requirements
Visually inspect electrical equipment and cord assemblies
Prepare and correctly use a portable appliance tester (PAT)
Perform the required electrical safety tests
Interpret test results and identify unsafe equipment
Apply the correct test tags
Record results and maintain testing documentation

Your face-to-face training runs from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with a strict maximum of 12 students per class. The small class size gives you plenty of opportunities to practice using a PAT tester and receive individual assistance from an experienced industry trainer. Before attending, you will need to complete a short LLND skills check. You will also need to complete the online WHS component as part of the course. If necessary, the WHS component can be completed after your face-to-face training, however all course requirements must be successfully completed before your Statement of Attainment can be issued.

Everything required for the training day is provided, including equipment, a course manual, equipment guide, pen and notepad. You are also welcome to bring your own portable appliance tester if you would like to learn using it. After completing the course, you will receive free lifetime technical support by phone, email or at our Rowville showroom.

Test and Tag Requirements in VIC

Victorian employers must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes managing electrical risks and having appropriate systems for the safe use, inspection, testing and maintenance of workplace electrical equipment.

WorkSafe Victoria advises that regular inspection, testing and tagging can identify electrical faults and deterioration that may not be found through visual inspection alone. How often equipment should be tested depends on factors such as the type of equipment, how it is used and the environment in which it operates. AS/NZS 3760:2022 provides recommended inspection and testing timeframes.

Testing may be undertaken by a competent person with the appropriate knowledge, training, skills and experience. However, competency is limited to the work a person is qualified to perform, and repairing electrical defects may require a licensed electrician.

This course develops practical skills in visually inspecting electrical equipment, using a portable appliance tester and recording test results in accordance with applicable requirements.

Please note: Construction sites and certain specialised workplaces may be subject to additional electrical safety controls and testing schedules.

Do I need to be an electrician to complete this course?

No. You don't need to be an electrician or have any previous electrical experience to complete the course.

In Victoria, you don't need an electrician's licence to perform the inspection and pass/fail testing covered by this course, but you must be trained and competent to carry out the work safely and correctly.

Is this qualification recognised throughout Australia?

Yes. After successfully completing the course, you'll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for UEESS00174 – Electrical Safety Testing of Electrical Cord Connected Equipment and Cord Assemblies Skill Set.

Because testing and tagging requirements can vary between states, territories, industries and workplaces, you should always follow the requirements that apply where you are working.

What does being a "competent person" mean in VIC?

In Victoria, a competent person has the appropriate knowledge, training, skills and experience to inspect and test electrical equipment safely and correctly.

Completing nationally recognised training and being assessed as competent provides evidence of these capabilities.

Is a one-day course enough to test and tag confidently on my own?

The face-to-face training takes one full day, but it also includes approximately three to four hours of online WHS preparation and a short skills check.

Classes include both theory and extensive hands-on practice using portable appliance testers. You'll be assessed on the required knowledge and practical skills before completing the course.

What equipment will I learn to test?

You'll learn how to visually inspect, test and tag common low-voltage cord-connected electrical equipment and cord assemblies. This includes items such as portable appliances, power tools, extension leads, IEC leads and power boards.

You'll also learn how to use a portable appliance tester, identify safe and unsafe equipment, apply the appropriate tags and record your testing results.

What isn't covered by this course?

The course doesn't cover electrical installation, repairs or modifications. It also doesn't include plug top replacement or three-phase test and tag training, which are available as separate courses.

You'll learn to recognise when equipment is outside your training or requires attention from a licensed electrician or another appropriately qualified person.

Do I need to bring my own portable appliance tester to the course?

No. Portable appliance testers and the equipment required for training are provided on the day.

f you already own a PAT, you're welcome to bring it so you can practise using the model you'll work with after the course.

Does my qualification expire or require refresher training?

Your Statement of Attainment doesn't have an expiry date. However, you're responsible for maintaining current knowledge and practical competency.

Refresher training is recommended if you haven't used your skills for some time or if relevant standards, equipment or workplace requirements change.

Can I use this qualification to start my own test and tag business?

Yes. The qualification can provide the competency basis for offering test and tag services in Australia. You don't need an electrician's licence to perform testing and tagging if you meet VIC's competent-person requirements.

Starting a business involves additional responsibilities, including appropriate business registration and insurance, suitable testing equipment, accurate records and compliance with any client or industry-specific requirements.

The qualification doesn't authorise you to undertake electrical repairs, installation or other licensed electrical work.
